Wildlife Tours in Ghana

Ghana has various sites for visiting wildlife, but most are far from Accra.

3-Day Elephant Safari Tour

We recommended a minimum of 3 days for visiting Mole National Park, home to our elephant population. This is enough time to most likely ensure you get an encounter with the elephants with 2 morning safaris and 2 afternoon safaris.

This includes round-trip domestic flights from Accra to Tamale, where you meet your driver to carry you the remaining 3 hours by vehicle, as well as a couple local cultural attractions.

Half-day Tour to Shai Hills

This morning tour to Shai Hills allows you to visit the closest wildlife destination to Accra, which contains baboons and many antelope, as well as ostrich, imported zebras, and caves which are home to enormous fruit bat colonies. Ascend the lookout rock for a scenic vista of the plains.

Day Trip to Shai Hills, Forest & Falls

This tour extends a morning at Shai Hills into a full day tour by adding a hike to the seasonal Tsenku Falls in the sacred Dodowa Forest. This forest is site of the Kantamanso battle, leading to British domination. See the ancient baobab tree where the conflict ended, and possibly spot one of the magical fairies that supposedly inhabit the forest.

2-Day Wildlife Tour

Visit the Shai Hills Resource Reserve near Accra, where baboons, antelope and birds, as well as imported zebra and ostrich, can easily be seen. After an overnight on the Volta River, continue to a monkey sanctuary to frolic with habituated Mona monkeys before returning to Accra.

This tour also visits a kente weaving village, crafts market and a bead making workshop.

Elephant and Hippo Safari Tour

This 3 day tour is strictly a wildlife tour! Includes two elephant safaris at Mole National Park, and a canoe safari at the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary.

Not recommended during the rain season due to possible high water allowing hippos to stay well hidden. November through March is best.

10 Day Wildlife and Culture Tour

After a tour of Accra, take a domestic flight to the remote Mole National Park for an elephant safari. On the return drive to Accra, we visit a monkey sanctuary, a butterfly sanctuary, and the rain forest canopy walkway at Kakum National Park.

Also experience ancient mosques, markets, traditional villages, waterfalls, the former slave castle at Cape Coast, and two separate cultural performances.

Ghana Wildlife Parks

Tour the major wildlife destinations in Ghana, including the remote Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary in the Upper West Region, Mole National Park for an elephant safari, the Shai Hills Resource Reserve, a monkey sanctuary, crocodile ponds, and a birding hike at Kakum National Park.

Other sites include Kintampo Falls, the former slave dungeon at Cape Coast, beaches, markets, traditional villages, and Manhyia Palace, home of the Ashanti King.

Mole National Park Getaway

Fast overnight trip to Mole National Park for an elephant safari as well as viewings of monkeys, warthogs, baboons, antelope and more! Includes round-trip domestic airfare from Accra.

Not recommended during the rain season due to possibility of no elephant sightings on such a short trip. November through March is best for a short safari tour.
