22 Day Birding Tour of Ghana
Overview
A 22-day birding tour in various ecological zones (Coastal Savanna, Semi-Deciduous Rainforest, Guinea Savanna, and Sudan Savanna) with a birding specialist from the Ghana Wildlife Society. Elephants, monkeys and possibly marine turtles also may be seen. Includes a quick overview of Ghana via a couple days of historic and cultural sites.

Daily Itinerary
Day 1
Accra Arrival
- Meet your arriving flight at Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
- Safe transport to your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. Continue to Accra.
- Refresh and relax. Neighborhood or Accra city orientation as time permits.
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel in Tesano.
Day 2
Atewa Range Forest, Bunso Eco Park
- Early morning depart for the Atewa Forest, a Globally Significant Biodiversity Area.
- Over 200 species of birds and over 400 species of butterflies have been recorded
- Bunso Eco Park, have a canopy walk whiles seeing birds and butterflies.
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel in Koforidua.
Day 3
Boti Falls, Akaa Falls, Umbrella Rock, Asenema Falls
- Experience Boti Falls' wonders, spotting exotic birds amid serene forest trails.
- Birdwatch at Akaa Falls and Umbrella Rock, amidst stunning landscapes.
- Spot vibrant birds near Asenema Falls, in peaceful natural surroundings.
- Overnight at a luxury tent in the reserve.
Day 4
Shai Hills, Dodowa Forest, Tsenku Falls, Ho
- Early morning departure for wildlife viewing at Shai Hills Wildlife Preserve.
- Baboons, birds, butterflies, antelope, bat caves and cultural remains.
- Onwards to Dodowa for a hike in the enchanted forest to visit Tsenku Falls.
- Overnight at an upscale hotel with a view of the the town in Ho.
Day 5
Full Day Birding At Kalakpa Forest, Kente Weaving Village
- Early morning rise visiting the Kalakpa Resource Reserve.
- Full day birding in this gallery forest which offers such wonderful species of birds.
- Species to be seen include; Striped kingfisher, Purple roller, Puvel Illadopsis, etc.
- Overnight at an upscale resort on a clean sandy beach.
Day 6
Keta Lagoon, Canoe Safari, Village Tour
- Early birding at Keta lagoon which is Ghana's most important marine birding site.
- Spot diverse bird species on a guided canoe safari along Avu Lagoon.
- Explore the historic Bludo community while spotting vibrant birdlife.
- Overnight at an upscale resort on a clean sandy beach.
Day 7
Sakumono Lagoon, Achimota Forest Birding
- Morning birding at the Sakumono Lagoon, near an urbanized area of the port city of Tema. This is a Ramsar site of importance in Ghana.
- Continue to the Achimota forest for an afternoon birding and wildlife viewing.
- Overnight at a secluded mid-range guesthouse in Kokrobite.
Day 8
Densu Delta, Winneba Lagoon, Crocodiles, Birds & Bees
- Densu Delta and Winneba lagoon offer sites of migratory birds and waterfowl.
- Sun Bird Trail has 3 ecosystems: rainforest, secondary forest and pond environment.
- Crocodile ponds and weaver bird community at Hans Botel. Stingless bee facility.
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel near Kakum National Park.
Day 9
Forest Canopy Walk, Kakum National Park
- 5:30 AM birding from the rainforest canopy walkway before it opens to the public.
- Kakum is Ghana's most significant birding park, with over 266 species including white-breasted guinea fowl, African grey parrot, and nine species of hornbill.
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel near Kakum National Park.
Day 10
Kakum National Park, Depart for Ankasa Game Reserve
- Morning visit to the canopy walkway for birds spotting before it opens to the public.
- Depart west along the coast on a long drive to Ankasa Protected Area.
- Arrive at Ankasa Forest before dark, have a night expedition in the area.
- Overnight at a bed & breakfast facility in the forest.
Day 11
Full Day Birding at Ankasa Protected Area
- Early morning hike at Ankasa, which has Ghana's largest concentration of biodiversity. Focus on area around the Ankasa River and the Nini River.
- Begin our search for White-bellied, Shining-Blue, and Blue-breasted Kingfishers.
- Overnight at a bed & breakfast facility in the forest.
Day 12
Amansuri Wetlands, Nzulezu Stilt Village, Fort Apollonia, Elmina
- Early morning canoe ride along the Amansuri River, Ghana largest swamp forest.
- Many species, including Kingfishers, are found in this unique environment.
- Visit Fort Apollonia, and continue drive to Elmina stopping at a fishing village.
- Overnight at a 3-star beach resort in Elmina.
Day 13
Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle, Picathartes Expedition
- Explore the Posuban shrines of Elmina maintained by Asafo community groups.
- Tour the U.N. World Heritage Site and former slave dungeon of Cape Coast castle.
- Visit the nesting site of the yellow headed Picathartes, a most sought after specimen
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel in Ejisu.
Day 14
Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary, Lake Bosomtwe
- Morning hike at the Bobiri forest reserve and butterfly sanctuary.
- Continue to Lake Bosomtwe, Africa's largest meteorite impact lake.
- Padua ride on lake with local fisherman or horseback ride on lakeside trail.
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel in Ejisu.
Day 15
Full Day at the Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary
- Early-morning at Owabi wildlife sanctuary, Ghana's only inland Ramsar site.
- Explore the wetlands, home to thriving birdlife and peaceful forest habitats.
- After several hours of birding expedition, drive back to your hotel to refresh and relax.
- Overnight at a mid-range hotel in Ejisu.
Day 16
Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary
- Experience Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary with birdwatching, scenic trails, crocodile sightings, vibrant flora, and refreshing waterfalls in this stunning sanctuary.
- After an exciting birding adventure, return to your hotel to unwind and recharge.

Day 17
Monkey Sanctuary, Tamale City Tour
- Morning depart for Tamale stopping along the way for fun with habituated monkeys.
- Tour Tamale, capital of the Northern Region. Includes the Gulpke Na palace, the Grand Mosque, a craft market and a Shea butter facility.

Mole National Park, Larabanga Mosque
- Morning walking safari at Mole National Park
- Visit the ancient Sudanese style mud-and-stick mosque at Larabanga.
- Afternoon driving safari at Mole National Park.

Day 19
Mole National Park, Mognori Cultural Village, Afternoon Safari
- Morning driving safari at Mole National Park (half or full day driving safari is extra).
- Relax poolside at Mole Lodge. Afternoon experience at the Mognori Cultural Village.
- Afternoon safari walk with the elephants at Mole National Park.

Day 20
Morning Safari, Culture Village, Bolgatanga, Night Birding
- Morning safari walk at Mole National Park (6:30 to 8:30).
- Depart for the culture village of Sognaayilli to learn the life of northern tribes.
- Visit the NASIA Wetland for nocturnal birding with unique and exciting sightings.

Day 21
Tono Dam, Sirigu, Catholic Cathedral and Grotto, Evening Birding
- Morning birding at Tono Dam. Large populations of water birds at this location.
- Sirigu painted adobe village. Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows mud brick cathedral..
- Relax at your hotel before returning to Tono Dam for another nocturnal excursion.

Day 22
Tono Dam, Zayaa Mosque, Flight to Accra
- Second morning at the Tono Dam. Visit the mud mosque at Wulugu.
- Drop-off at the airport in Tamale for your flight back to Accra.
- Be met at the airport and tranport to the international terminal for your flight.
