EMANCIPATION BEACH
Close to the Togo border, the narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Keta Lagoon is breathtaking. The main beach at Keta is Emancipation Beach, in memory of the time when Keta was an important trading port. While facilities are basic at this public beach, there are a number of outstanding beach resorts that cater well to guests along this incredible expanse that is about 4.5 hours east of Accra.
The Keta Lagoon is the largest lagoon system in Ghana. The area surrounding Emancipation Beach is rich in biodiversity, with the lagoon attracting a variety of migratory and resident birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The poorly maintained, but well-staffed, historic Fort Prizenstein is nearby, as well as local shrines, and local farmers selling tapioca and palm wine along the roadsides.
