Beaches of Ghana

Here some of the best beaches in Ghana that you can choose among, in order of distance from Accra. Be aware that many beaches in Ghana are places of work for fishermen. There are also strong rip tides at many locations, making a number of Ghana beaches dangerous for swimming. So always inquire locally before entering the ocean.

Labadi Pleasure Beach

This public beach is located in La, at the western edge of Accra. It has a three-km beach front that offers wide variety of activities. The beach is blessed with strong winds. The wide expanse of this sandy beach is right for Frisbee, football and beach volleyball. Changing-room facilities, restaurants, snack bars and shower rooms are plentiful on the beach.

There is an entrance fee for getting into this beach. Entertainment by musicians, performers and acrobats take place here regularly and there are always vendors selling crafts. On weekends, the party continues until dawn!

Kokrobite

Kokrobite is a funky beach town well suited to all beach lovers who feel like something different with lots of variety. It is a home for all reggae lovers and Rastafarians as well, so it can have more of a party atmosphere than other beaches outside of Accra.

Located about 27km west of Accra, Kokrobite beach is a popular destination for beach lovers seeking a beach getaway. Due to the proximity of Accra, some beaches in this area can be very dirty, so be certain to choose wisely.

Surfing is available, live entertainment is plentiful on weekends, and varous classes of resorts can be found.

Prampram to New Ningo

About an hour east of Accra is the fishing village of Prampram, which can take longer depending on traffic. There are a number of beach resorts, some with wonderful beaches, others with no beach at all! The Comme Ci public beach is large and quite lovely here.

Area attractions include the hilltop African Ancestral Wall, offering good local meals with a terrific ocean view. The Prampram fish market is lively beach market with colorful fishing boats. It is adjacent to the ruins of Fort Vernon. The fort is unattended and in very poor condition, so be careful if you wander inside.

This area is very quiet through the week, and very busy on weekends.

Gomoa Fetteh

About an hour west of Accra you will find a fantastic beach that is rarely visited. This town, perched on a hillside, slopes down to two lovely sandy beaches. Located nearby is the fishing village of Senya Beraku, which is home to one of our less visited smaller forts, the Fort of Good Hope.

This is the closest beach to Accra that is suitable for surfing.

Big Ada and Ada Foah

One hundred km east of Accra is Ada Beach. This coastal beach town is located at the estuary of the Volta River. It is an area of great scenic beauty. Its extensive sand bars have become nesting grounds for sea birds and endangered species of marine turtles.

This is a perfect haven for everything from relaxation to water sports. Boats are a major transit system here, providing rides to various cultural attractions such as a mat weaving village, local rum distillery, mangrove forest, coconut oil processing, traditional shrines, and the well-known Crocodile Island. Boats are also available for transit to the last couple of beach resorts before the Volta River empties into the Ocean. You can see the mixing of the different waters here.

This is an exceptional area for maximizing your options for activities while at a beach environment.

Brenu Beach to Ampeni Point

With the exception of some resorts, most beaches from Cape Coast to Elmina have succumbed to erosion and have been lined by a large seawall of boulders. Most of the remaining beaches in the Cape-Coast-Elmina area tend to be quite rocky. Thus, the best beach experience is further west of Elmina between Brenu Beach and Ampeni Point. These places are further from the main road and the access roads are generally in poor condition. But you will be rewarded with beautiful, clean, sandy beaches at scenic remote locations. The beach stretches for miles and isn't littered with trash or excess people. You are mostly alone enjoying the tranquility. If you want beach relaxation at a moderate price, this area will soothe your spirit.

Emancipation Beach

Close to the Togo border, the narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Keta Lagoon is breathtaking. The main beach at Keta is Emancipation Beach, in memory of the time when Keta was an important trading port. While facilities are basic at this public beach, there are a number of outstanding beach resorts that cater well to guests along this incredible expanse that is about 4.5 hours east of Accra.

The Keta Lagoon is the largest lagoon system in Ghana. The area surrounding Emancipation Beach is rich in biodiversity, with the lagoon attracting a variety of migratory and resident birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The poorly maintained, but well-staffed, historic Fort Prizenstein is nearby, as well as local shrines, and local farmers selling tapioca and palm wine along the roadsides.

Busua Beach

Busua Beach is located on several acres of wide sandy beaches about 45 kms west of the port city of Takoradi in Ghana's Western Region, about a 6 hour drive from Accra. This is a popular destination for visitors and boasts a number of resorts of various styles. Surfing is a popular pastime here, with a number of surfing shops.

Busua beach is a wonderful place to be, with its night cool breeze and accommodating atmosphere. The water here is serene and most inviting. This is a fun environment with one of the best beaches in the Western Region.

Axim to Beyin

Ankobra Beach and Awangazule Beach are spectacular beaches located near the coastal village of Axim, a couple hours west of Takoradi. From Axim west to Beyin are a number of resorts for enjoying fantastic beaches. If relaxing in solitude on a clean, uncrowded palm lined beach is your idea of a good holiday, it is difficult to find a better location. While more of an effort, it is well worth the visit.
