Day Trips from Accra
Day Trips from Accra
Sometimes you only have a day or so available. Or perhaps you wish to stay in the comfort of Accra and make various day-trips. Here are some options you can try.
Accra Tour
(Half-day or whole day)
A tour of Accra can include many points. Independence Square, Makola Market and the Jamestown lighthouse give a good flavor of the city. Memorials include the Kwame Nkrumah memorial celebrating the first president of a free Ghana and the W.E.B. DuBois center celebrating the famous pan-Africanist. |
Beach Day
(Half-day or whole day or overnight)
La Beach is a popular beach at the western edge of Accra. While visiting there, you could also go shopping for crafts at the International Trade Fair and one of the exotic coffin shops that are in this area. Further afield is Kokrobite beach, about a half-hour drive from Accra. It is a very laid-back hippie/Rasta beach town with lots of craft shopping, music and food. |
Highlands & Forests above Accra
(Day trip)
Visit the Aburi Botanical Gardens or the Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm and the scenic highland village of Akropong. If shopping for crafts is of interest, the Aburi Craft Market offers items at a vastly lower price than can be found in Accra. The cool morning mists in this area are refreshing and highland resorts give amazing views towards Accra. |
Home Compound Visit
(Half-day, whole day or overnight)
An urban village is literally where Accra meets bush - a once village now surrounded by the ever growing metropolis of Accra. So while urban today, the area very much still has a village feel to it. Any guests of Easy Track Ghana that visit are treated to a very special reception. While this is not a tourist site, you would have interactions with people that would be more intimate than anywhere else. You would be welcomed into a family compound and enjoy a home cooked meal with the family. |
Accra Shopping
(Half-day or whole day)
Shopping experiences are plentiful and varied. You can see modern Accra by visiting the Accra Mall or traditional crafts, cloths and carvings at a number of boutiques, shops or even roadside sellers. Oxford Street in the Osu neighborhood is lined with vendors and the International Trade Fair at La is an exhibition area where vendors from across West Africa can be found. |
Traditional Blessing or Naming Ceremony
(Half-day, whole day or overnight)
Receive a traditional blessing or naming ceremony from a spiritual leader if you would like to experience an authentic African ceremony. Your gift of gin, schnapps, cash or a live chicken would be well received by the traditional African gods and blessings bestowed upon you for a safe journey. |
University of Ghana at Legon
(Half-day or whole day)
A visit to the campus of the University of Ghana at Legon could include a visit to an academic department of your interest, a visit to the university bookshop or library, a hike to the campus hilltop for an outstanding view of the surrounding area, or even attending a theater production by the drama department. There is a good cafe on campus as well as local and continental eating establishments nearby. |
Birding Day
(Half-day or whole day or overnight)
The Sakumo Lagoon in Tema is an exciting place for bird watching and close to Accra. If you are into birding, this would be an exciting half-day trip. Also, the Keta Lagoon is a wonderful place for birding at most times of the year. You could overnight on a sand bar with the ocean on one side and the lagoon on the other side. |
Exotic Coffin Makers
(Half-day)
In Teshie, near La Beach, are exotic coffin makers known around the world for their flamboyant design. Crafted to resemble an object of importance to the deceased, these beautiful coffins can be crafted into many shapes, including planes, crabs, boats or even a bottle of beer. |
Shai Hills Wildlife Sanctuary
(Half-day or whole day)
Shai Hills is not the biggest or best wildlife park in Ghana, but it is the closest to Accra. There are baboons and many antelope at this fenced reserve as well as caves which are home to enormous fruit bat colonies. |
"Extra Bag"
(Half-day)
Our "One Extra Bag" program is a unique opportunity for you to make a contribution to a reputable school, orphanage, clinic or other organization. We can make arrangements for your meeting and special reception you will receive as a patron. We can even escort you to local markets to help shop for your donations locally, further injecting good into the economy. |
Cape Coast
(Long day, Overnight, or two days)
The former slave castle at Cape Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site commemorating a sad history inflicted on Africa, and Ghana in particular. This is about a 3 hour drive from Accra, so it is possible in a single day. But it is a great overnight trip allowing you to stay ocean-front and visit Kakum National Park the following morning to enjoy Africa's only rain forest canopy walkway. The crocodile ponds at Hans Botel can be visited before returning to Accra. This is by far the most requested tour for a short visit. |
Volta Trip
(Day trip or overnight or two days)
It would be possible to go as far as the Volta River and return on the same day, but we would really advise to stay overnight on the banks of the river to fully enjoy this beautiful location. The river is safe for swimming here and you can canoe with a local fisherman or walk across the Adome Bridge, Ghana's only suspension bridge. An overnight tour could also visit a handmade bead workshop or monkey sanctuary before returning to Accra. |
Waterfalls
(Day trip or overnight or two days)
You could make a trip to Boti Falls and Akaa Falls in the Eastern Region. A visit to Boti could also include a moderate-strenuous hike to Umbrella Rock for spectacular views. Making an overnight excursion allows visiting waterfalls in the Volta Region, including Wli Falls, Ghana's tallest, and Tagbo Falls. |
We hope this gives you some idea of what you can do with a short time in Ghana. We can easily mix and match anything listed above to fill your time. Let us know how you would like to proceed. We are at your service in Ghana!
