The areas north of Lake Volta are more sparsely populated and less visited. These include the Northern Region, the Upper East Region and the Upper West Region. They have a much different feel than the southern part of Ghana. These are the places where wildlife, savanna, and desert cultures are prevalent. The architecture of the north is also unique, with painted adobe structures, mud-and-stick mosques, thatched compounds and rooftop homes in many villages.
	4-5 days	The best game viewing in Ghana is at Mole National Park. It is the only place in Ghana you are likely to see elephants in the wild and it is one of the few places in Africa where you can do some game viewing on foot. The mud-and-stick mosque at Larabanga is a nearby attraction. This is one of the most visited of these type mosques.
	5-6 days	Spend some time in Tamale to visit the fetish section at the market or the Gulpke Na Palace, an excellent example of northern architecture. Travel onwards to the Sirigu pottery and art village. Visit the sacred crocodile ponds and the Paga Pia's Palace at Paga, or the nearby Nania slave camp, both on the northern border with Burkina Faso.
	7-9 days	This is the full northern loop, continuing onwards from Paga, passing through Wa, the capital of the North West Region. The striking Wa Naa's palace is a beautiful example of northern architecture. Visit any number villages to see these unique styles of architecture or the visit the hippo sanctuary at Wechiau.
	10 days or more	Spend more time in Ghana's northern regions or pass into Burkina Faso to visit the capital city Ouagadougou.
